Constituent Questions : The Syntax and Semantics of Questions with Special Reference to Swedish

Description

This monograph has grown out of some issues that I began to investigate in my dissertation (Engdahl, 1980a). I am extremely grateful to the members of my doctoral committee, Emmon Bach, Chuck Clifton, Lyn Frazier, Barbara Partee, and Edwin Williams, who gave me construc- tive feedback all through the writing of the dissertation. In particular, I want to thank my chairperson, Barbara Partee, for her detailed com- ments and insightful suggestions. To a large extent, the research pre- sented in this book represents further developments of ideas and problems that came up in our weekly meetings. During this period I also discussed with Eva Ejerhed, Irene Heim, Per-Kristian Halvorsen, Lauri Karttunen, Bill Ladusaw, Jim McCloskey, Stanley Peters, Arnim von Stechow, and Annie Zaenen who in various ways made me aware of additional aspects of the semantics of questions. Several people gave me helpful comments on my dissertation, most of which have influenced the present study in one way or another. Among these people I would like to mention Murvet Enc, Gerald Gazdar, Jeroen Groenendijk, Angelika Kratzer, Fred Landman, Alice ter Meulen, Mats Rooth, and Martin Stokhof. While I was developing the analysis presented in this book, I greatly benefitted from opportunities to present my ideas to other people.

In the teachings of Jesus, there are prayers, and then there is prayer-the silent, loving communion with the divine, beyond words or ritual. With Father Thomas Keating's book "Open Mind, Open Heart," hundreds of thousands discovered the transformative power of Centering Prayer as a form of Christian meditation. Now, with "The Path of Centering Prayer," Keating's senior student, friend, and advisor David Frenette reveals the profound depths of this practice, making it easier for meditators to deepen their connection with God. Thrall, wise shaman and the war chief of the Horde, has sensed a disturbing change ...Long ago, Azeroth's destructive native elementals raged across the world until the benevolent titans imprisoned them within the Elemental Plane. Despite the titans' intervention, many elementals have ended up back on Azeroth. Over the ages, shaman like Thrall have communed with these spirits and, through patience Constituent Questions : The Syntax and Semantics of Questions with Special Reference to Swedish pdf and dedication, learned to soothe roaring infernos, bring rain to sun-scorched lands, and otherwise temper the elementals' ruinous influence on the world of Azeroth. Now Thrall has discovered that the elementals no longer heed the shaman's call. While Thrall seeks answers to what ails the confused elements, he also wrestles with the orcs' precarious future as his people face dwindling supplies and growing hostility with their night elf neighbours. The fate of Azeroth's great races is shrouded in a fog of uncertainty, and the erratic behaviour of the elemental spirits, troubling though it is, may only be the first ominous warning sign of the cataclysm to come.
