Shai Halevi,Tal Rabin: Theory of Cryptography

Theory of Cryptography

Description

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third Theory of Cryptography Conference, TCC 2006, held in New York, NY, USA in March 2006. The 31 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 91 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on zero-knowledge, primitives, assumptions and models, the bounded-retrieval model, privacy, secret sharing and multi-party computation, universally-composible security, one-way functions and friends, and pseudo-random functions and encryption.

In the teachings of Jesus, there are prayers, and then there is prayer-the silent, loving communion with the divine, beyond words or ritual. With Father Thomas Keating's book "Open Mind, Open Heart," hundreds of thousands discovered the transformative power of Centering Prayer as a form of Christian meditation. Now, with "The Path of Centering Prayer," Keating's senior student, friend, and advisor David Frenette reveals the profound depths of this practice, making it easier for meditators to deepen their connection with God. Thrall, wise shaman and the war chief of the Horde, has sensed a disturbing change ...Long ago, Azeroth's destructive native elementals raged across the world until the benevolent titans imprisoned them within the Elemental Plane. Despite the titans' intervention, many elementals have ended up back on Azeroth. Over the ages, shaman like Thrall have communed with these spirits and, through patience Constituent Questions : The Syntax and Semantics of Questions with Special Reference to Swedish pdf and dedication, learned to soothe roaring infernos, bring rain to sun-scorched lands, and otherwise temper the elementals' ruinous influence on the world of Azeroth. Now Thrall has discovered that the elementals no longer heed the shaman's call. While Thrall seeks answers to what ails the confused elements, he also wrestles with the orcs' precarious future as his people face dwindling supplies and growing hostility with their night elf neighbours. The fate of Azeroth's great races is shrouded in a fog of uncertainty, and the erratic behaviour of the elemental spirits, troubling though it is, may only be the first ominous warning sign of the cataclysm to come.

David Blake: Modelling Pension Fund Investment Behaviour

Modelling Pension Fund Investment Behaviour

Description

First published in 1992, this title conducts an in-depth examination of the investment behaviour of pension funds, presenting the first econometric model in this area. Using the well-established framework of modern portfolio theory, David Blake derives a model of optimal portfolio behaviour that explains pension fund asset holdings in terms of the most important macroeconomic and cyclical indicators. He shows how factors such as industry profitability, the balance of payments and the monetary and fiscal policies of the government influence pension fund investments. Broad in scope, this reissue will be of particular value to students and academics with an interest in econometrics, investment analysis and the pension fund industry.

Constituent Questions : The Syntax and Semantics of Questions with Special Reference to Swedish

Description

This monograph has grown out of some issues that I began to investigate in my dissertation (Engdahl, 1980a). I am extremely grateful to the members of my doctoral committee, Emmon Bach, Chuck Clifton, Lyn Frazier, Barbara Partee, and Edwin Williams, who gave me construc- tive feedback all through the writing of the dissertation. In particular, I want to thank my chairperson, Barbara Partee, for her detailed com- ments and insightful suggestions. To a large extent, the research pre- sented in this book represents further developments of ideas and problems that came up in our weekly meetings. During this period I also discussed with Eva Ejerhed, Irene Heim, Per-Kristian Halvorsen, Lauri Karttunen, Bill Ladusaw, Jim McCloskey, Stanley Peters, Arnim von Stechow, and Annie Zaenen who in various ways made me aware of additional aspects of the semantics of questions. Several people gave me helpful comments on my dissertation, most of which have influenced the present study in one way or another. Among these people I would like to mention Murvet Enc, Gerald Gazdar, Jeroen Groenendijk, Angelika Kratzer, Fred Landman, Alice ter Meulen, Mats Rooth, and Martin Stokhof. While I was developing the analysis presented in this book, I greatly benefitted from opportunities to present my ideas to other people.

Mick Imlah: The Lost Leader

The Lost Leader

Description

'No poet in Scotland now can take as his inspiration the folk impulse that created the ballads, the people's songs, the legends of Mary Stuart and Prince Charlie,' proposed Edwin Muir. Yet many of the poems in Mick Imlah's new collection do take the most over-worn of Scottish myths as their apparent starting points, spanning the Wallace and the Bruce; the Bonnie Prince (pivotal "Lost Leader" of the title), Robert Burns and Walter Scott; whisky, Clydeside and football. Imlah's approach to this folklore is brilliantly fresh, a modern, sardonic but strongly-felt rendering of Scotland: from AD 500, by way of a guided tour of Iona, to yesterday at a Dumfries bus depot. And, as the chronicle reaches the twentieth century, the poems turn to friends and family - childhood reminiscences, elegies and celebrations - influenced still by sporting and military fantasy, the charm of history and the power of anachronism.

In the shadow of a war that rages through Europe, brothers Calum and Neil work to gather pine cones in the grounds of a Scottish estate. When Calum releases two mutilated rabbits from a snare, he comes face to face with Duror, the gamekeeper. In retaliation, in the depths of the wood, Duror lays a trap for the cone-gatherers. Neil prophesises that forces of evil will encroach upon the harmony of their lives. It is a prophesy that comes true when Duror commits an act so brutal it destroys all sense of humanity in the once thriving wood. Powerful and unforgettable, Robin Jenkins' masterpiece is a haunting story of love and violence, and an investigation of class-conflict, war and envy. A spectacular tale of tyranny and freedom, The Lost Leader download book destruction and hope, Colonization takes us into the tumultuous 1960s, as the reptilian Race ponders its uneasy future. But now a new, even deadlier war threatens. Though the clamoring tribes of Earth play dangerous games of diplomacy, the ultimate power broker will be the Race itself. For the colonists have one option no human can ignore. With a vast, ancient empire already in place, the Race has the power to annihilate every living being on planet Earth . . .

Peter Ferdinand Drucker: The Essential Drucker

The Essential Drucker

Description

Peter Drucker's wide-ranging book, drawn from his best work, looks at management, the individual and society. He connects these themes of today's world with his usual clear-sighted and far-reaching style to create a work which encapsulates his essential and strongest writings in one volume. Under the three headings, Drucker covers aspects such as what the non-profits are teaching business and the information that executives need today. In his section on the individual he gives advice on knowing your own strengths and values, your time and, intriguingly, the second half of your life. The third part on society encompasses the coming of the entrepreneurial society and citizenship through the social sector.

Dandy Gilver and a Bothersome Number of Corpses

Description

Before she was a detective, before she was a reluctant wife and distracted mother, before she was even a debutante, Dandy Gilver spent one perfect summer with the Lipscotts of Pereford. The golden memories of it have sustained her through many a cold snap in Perthshire. So when two of the Lipscott sisters beg her to help the third, she can hardly refuse. Sweet, pretty Fleur Lipscott: where is she now? The astonishing answer to this is that Fleur - still Miss Lipscott, indeed more Miss Lipscott than ever - is buried alive in the tiny seaside village of Portpatrick, working as a schoolmistress at St Columba's College for Young Ladies. But she is one of the few remaining, for St Columba's has been shedding mistresses as a snake its skins and the exodus is far from over. With mistresses vanishing and corpses mounting up, can Mrs Gilver, detective, pass herself off as Miss Gilver, English mistress, to solve the one and stop the other?

Paris is the city of light and the city of darkness - a place of ceaseless revolution and reinvention that for two thousand years has drawn those with the highest ideals and the lowest morals to its teeming streets. In Andrew Hussey's wonderful book we encounter the myriad citizens whose stories have shaped Paris: the nineteenth-century flaneurs aimlessly wandering Haussman's new streets; survivors and victims of ravaging plagues; the builders of Notre Dame Cathedral; those who turned the River Seine red with blood on St Bartholomew's Day; and the many others whose lives have imprinted themselves on a city that has always aroused strong emotions. The book sets the Empire within a broad historical context and not only explains its evolution and expansion in Africa and Asia, but also considers its impact on British politics, popular culture and society. It identifies and considers the main areas of historiographical controversy, and examines the balance sheet of the Empire, A Different Kind of Weather: A Memoir download ebook pdf discussing the costs and benefits for British society and her imperial colonies.

William Waldegrave: A Different Kind of Weather: A Memoir

A Different Kind of Weather: A Memoir

Description

'Why did you go into politics in the first place?' A question that former Cabinet minister has found himself asked, and indeed asking himself, over the years, Lord Waldegrave's is a life lived through politics. The youngest of seven children, and the son of an earl, Waldegrave's quintessentially English upbringing would go on to shape the course of his life, instilling in him a sense of independence and self-discipline needed to steel one for a successful career in government. Formative years spent at Eton, Oxford and Harvard fortified his resolve to enter the political establishment, and by the early seventies he finally achieved his greatest ambition. As an fearless young Conservative politician in the seventies and eighties, one who witnessed the fall of Heath and the triumph and eventual decline of Thatcher, Waldegrave was firmly at the heart of one of the most exciting and tumultuous periods of modern British history. However just as his star was in the ascent, Waldegrave became embroiled in a scandal which tarnished his reputation, but could not dampen his voracious enthusiasm for the political game. An unembroidered account of the narcotic effect of politics from one of the most fiercely intellectual governmental figures of the modern age, A Different Kind of Weather is a beautifully weighted memoir of political success and failure, and the passing of an era. A Spectator Book of the Year - 'refreshingly and engagingly candid' (Jane Ridley)

A Ted Hughes Bestiary: Selected Poems

Description

Originally the medieval bestiary or book of animals set out to establish safe distinctions - between them and us - but Hughes' poetry works always in a contrary direction: showing what man and beast have in common, the reservoir from which we all draw. Alice Oswald's selection is arranged chronologically, with an eye to different books and styles, but equally to those poems that embody animals, rather than just describe them. Some poems are here because, although not strictly speaking animal, they become so in the process of writing; and in keeping with the bestiary tradition there are plenty of imaginary animals - all concentratedly coming about their business. The resulting selection is subtly responsive to a central aspect of Hughes' achievement, while offering room to some wonderful overlooked poems, and to 'those that have the wildest tunes.'

In this book Carolyn Forster takes you through the steps and gives you the tools and techniques for using large shapes to finish large quilts quickly and easily. The basic shapes used in the quilt projects include hexagons, diamonds, triangles and kites. These shapes are successfully created using a basic quilting ruler and the hexagon template provided in the book. Carolyn even provides instructions for calculating and constructing hexagon paper templates allowing you to achieve any desired quilt block size. Complete instructions include how to cut half-hexagons, partial hexagons, diamonds, half-diamonds, triangles and kites using the hexagon template. Techniques include combining hexagons with other shapes, sewing hexagons by machine and by hand, sewing hexagons and other shapes together in rows then sewing the rows of hexagons together. Offering a variety of binding techniques, Carolyn takes you through the various steps of binding hexagon quilts. Helpful tips throughout the book help improve accuracy and gain A Ted Hughes Bestiary: Selected Poems download ebook confidence when sewing hexagon quilts. Projects include 8 quilts, table mat, table runner, bag and pincushion.

Temple of the Cosmos: The Ancient Egyptian Experience of the Sacred pdf

Jeremy Naydler: Temple of the Cosmos: The Ancient Egyptian Experience of the Sacred

Temple of the Cosmos: The Ancient Egyptian Experience of the Sacred

Description

In this guide to the cosmology of ancient Egypt, Jeremy Naydler recreates the experience of living in another time and place. Temple of the Cosmos explores Egypt's sacred geography and mythology; but more importantly, it reveals with unprecedented clarity an ancient consciousness in tune with the rhythms of the earth. The ancient Egyptians experienced their gods not as remote beings but rather as psychic and natural forces, transpersonal energies that played a part in everyday life. This direct experience of the gods shaped the Egyptian concepts of human development, healing, magic, and the soul's journey through the Underworld as described in the Books of the Dead. While building on the pioneering efforts of R. A. Schwaller de Lubicz and others, "Temple of the Cosmos" is much more than a recapitulation of previous theories of Egyptian spirituality. Rather, this book breaks new ground by placing the work of other Egyptologists in an original, magical context. The result is a brilliant reimagining of the Egyptian worldview and its sacred path of spiritual unfolding.

Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology

Description

A stunning look at the paradoxical relationship between the artisanal and the technological in fashion The complex and often ambiguous relationship between the hand crafted and the machine made is examined in this intriguing look at the ever-changing world of fashion and taste. Manus x Machina traces styles of dress from one-of-a-kind works and haute couture created by highly skilled artisans, through the introduction of industrial manufacturing, to extraordinary recent technological advancements applied to high fashion, such as 3D printing, laser cutting, and computer-generated weaving and patterns. The oppositional relationship between the machine, as representative of democracy and mass production, and the hand, as the hallmark of elitism, is explored in its many facets in this fascinating book. Paradoxically, technology in fashion has both advanced artistic creation and obscured the sense of the designer's expert hand. Similarly, handmade garments have come to represent either a nostalgia for lost craftsmanship or, in haute couture, a cult of personality and affluence. Interviews with renowned and cutting-edge designers such as Sarah Burton, Karl Lagerfeld, and Miuccia Prada discuss how technology can blur the line between haute couture and pret-a-porter, and ultimately question the relevance of the distinction between hand and machine. A tour de force in art book production, Manus x Machina incorporates two volumes into its innovative package. The main volume of the book includes a smaller hand-sewn booklet, which features the printed interviews, tucked into the back jacket flap. The outer cover of the main volume is made of three-ply plastic layers with high-frequency weld and die-cut flaps. The paperback cover is die cut (modelled on the punch cards used in the first automated weaving looms), and the main volume includes 5 different paper stocks and silver foil stamping, and is printed with both high-density and ultraviolet inks. The book also features new photography of extraordinary pieces, including intricate 19th-century floral designs by William Morris, handcrafted haute couture of designers such as Christian Dior and Alexander McQueen, and the specatuclar 3D creations of Iris van Herpen.

This is his honest and insightful account of his time as a pseudo operator. His story is brutally truthful, frightening, sometimes humorous and often sad. In later years, after Rhodesia became Zimbabwe, he was involved with a number of other former Selous Scouts in the attempted coups in the Ciskei, a South The Essence of Shinto: Japan's Spiritual Heart ebook pdf African homeland, and Lesotho, an independent nation, whose only crimes were supporting the African National Congress. Training terrorists, or as they preferred to be called, 'liberation armies', to conduct a war of terror on innocent civilians, was the very thing he had spent the last ten years in Rhodesia fighting against. This is the true, untold story of these failed attempts at governmental overthrows. --- "The finest account I've read on the Selous Scouts. Without any kind of glorification whatsoever, Andy Balaam tells it like it was-the fear, the terror, the adrenaline highs of combat in the bush-and it is one of the first accounts to actually describe in depth the workings of the Scouts famed'pseudo ops'. Gail Marsh: 19th Century Embroidery Techniques

19th Century Embroidery Techniques

Description

This beautiful book explores the 19th century craft of embroidery, its shift from industry to hobby and how it was crafted and displayed in the home. Each chapter is packed with a close look at the techniques that were used, detailed illustrations and unique photographs of original embroidered pieces. Interweaved are snippets of social history, historical facts and quotes from ladies and gentlemen of the period. This delightful book is a must for any student studying embroidery, fashion and textiles, craft persons interested in historical embroidery techniques, collectors of textiles, plus any needlework enthusiast wanting to extend their knowledge.

This is a revised, expanded and newly illustrated edition of the text, originally published in 1986, following the famous "Atlantean Trilogy" of films. The couples' personal stories of love, marriage, money, and children are woven together with the threads of social and political history of nineteenth century England. As changes in industry and agriculture affect the people of Pemberley and the neighboring countryside, the Darcys strive to be progressive and forward-looking while upholding beloved traditions. On Easter Sunday, 23 April 1916, the Irish Republican Brotherhood's military council put their names to the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, declaring that they were the provisional government of an Ireland free from British rule. In effect, each man had knowingly signed his own death warrant. Since then, the Seven have been eulogized and used as political weapons by many. To challenge the morality of the Rising was to be denounced as 19th Century Embroidery Techniques free ebook unpatriotic, even un-Irish. One hundred years on, however, there is an increasing recognition within Ireland that it's time for the founding fathers to come under proper scrutiny. Award-winning author Ruth Dudley Edwards explores how these men - from contrasting backgrounds and with starkly different personalities - came together to initiate an armed rebellion that profoundly changed the course of Irish history. She draws on a lifetime's research and reflection to separate each man from his myth, assess his virtues and flaws and bring together the strands of 1916's revolutionary web. What made the Seven believe themselves entitled to stage a rebellion without authorisation from the organisations they claimed to represent?
